Idol Nights

One of the biggest changes this year in my TV watching was the addition of American Idol to my must see shows. I might have seen a few episodes from the first season only because a college roommate knew one of the contestants, so we watched — some what. It’s funny I remember it clearly, he was watching it at the apartment and he introduced it to me, “hey have you seen this new show…” The rest is history I guess.

The rest of the seasons I might have tuned into on really boring nights but I didn’t follow the show per se. Not until now.

I don’t know exactly what factors played into my new interest in AI, it could have been the fact that Simon was not there anymore.

It could’ve been the new judges, Jennifer Lo and Tyler. By the way I think they’ve done well. Lopez was able to put her career on a totally different path for the better I think.

It could’ve been the hope that they would change the format of the show which they have done. They don’t do the whole ridicule thing and I think that has made the show better from what it was known for.

It could be that they have such a wide variety of unique vocals. I’m a sucker for unique voices with rasp, growl, or some nuance. I’ve seen the beautiful big perfect pop voices enough, I look for voices I can recognize by a unique identifier. What ended up happening was that they were all growling or doing something weird with their voices — which was cool.

But I think of all the factors, the biggest factor was this refrigerator magnet I found with the contestants mug shots that I could move in whatever order and mark with an X when eliminated. So coming off a totally crappy March Madness bracket I was ready to redeem myself when I found this little AI “bracket” so I think that was the biggest factor of my watching this season of idol. The American Idol “Bored” Game for guys.

As you can see my pick to win it all was eliminated.  That was bad but it was good on so many levels.  I was a complete cynic of the selection process and the voting process. I swore up and down that the producers impacted who was selected to contend and I swore up and down that votes only counted so much because the producers knew exactly who was getting them the biggest ratings.  Because after all, they never show the actual vote counts of everyone…in this day and age, that should be public information like the presidential election.  Plus I never believed in voting however many times you want, that’s such a dumb way of leaving it up to viewers. With today’s technology, I can’t believe there’s not a better system.  But anyway, Pia going home relieved some of that skepticism I was having about the whole issue.

Even though I had Pia to win and that negates my unique voice stance, I only had her because I thought the viewers would be pulling for that whole full package deal. Now I’m pulling for the Reinhart girl because I like the way she growls.

I guess the moral of this story is that AI publicity should create a social gaming site for dudes and that way they’ll get more interests from the male audience. Make it a game.
